What HSK Level Do I Need to Study in China?

There is no single HSK level for all universities. Check the level, minimum score, and validity period required by your chosen major. For English-taught programs, check which English qualifications are accepted; do not assume every program requires HSK or accepts the same IELTS alternatives.

As a scholarship-specific example, the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia’s CSC 2026/2027 announcement requires HSK 4 for Chinese-taught master’s and doctoral programs, as well as compliance with university requirements.

Is CSCA Required?

CSCA is an academic test, distinct from language certificates such as HSK, IELTS, or TOEFL. Ningbo’s 2026 undergraduate guide requires CSCA results from international applicants; test subjects depend on the major. Check your chosen program’s requirements before scheduling a test.

Application Document Checklist

  • A passport meeting the validity requirements for the intended intake.
  • Diploma and transcripts; if you have not graduated, check whether an expected-graduation letter and interim results are accepted.

Can I apply before graduating? Some universities accept proof of expected graduation. For example, Ningbo’s 2026 language guide accepts this during application, with final documents due by the university’s deadline.

How long is a language course in China? Options vary by university. Ningbo offers one semester or one year; a non-degree language program does not automatically guarantee bachelor’s admission.

Can I study without HSK? Options may include English-taught programs or language preparation. Still check any other language evidence and the entry requirements for your intended degree.
